Virtual EMDR Therapy in Ontario: Accessing Trauma Support From Home

Accessing specialized therapy isn't always easy. For people living in rural or smaller communities across Ontario, finding a therapist who offers the approach they're looking for can sometimes mean travelling significant distances or waiting for an available provider.

Virtual therapy can help remove some of those barriers.

As a Registered Psychotherapist providing virtual therapy across Ontario, I offer EMDR therapy online for adults who are looking for support with trauma, distressing memories, and other experiences that continue to affect them.

Why Consider Virtual EMDR Therapy?

One of the benefits of virtual therapy is that you don't have to travel to an office to access specialized support.

You can participate from a private space that feels comfortable and familiar, which can make therapy more accessible for people who:

  • Live in a rural or remote community

  • Have limited access to specialized mental health services nearby

  • Have difficulty travelling to appointments

  • Have work, family, or other responsibilities that make travel challenging

  • Simply prefer receiving therapy from home

Virtual therapy can also provide greater flexibility while allowing you to remain connected to your therapist from wherever you are in Ontario.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapeutic approach that can help people process distressing memories and experiences.

Rather than requiring you to repeatedly talk through every detail of a difficult experience, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation alongside focused attention on aspects of the experience.

The goal is not to erase memories. Instead, EMDR may help reduce the emotional distress associated with experiences that continue to feel upsetting or disruptive in the present.

What Is Virtual EMDR Like?

Virtual EMDR follows the same structured therapeutic process as in-person EMDR, with bilateral stimulation adapted for an online setting.

Before beginning reprocessing, we'll make sure you have strategies to help you feel grounded and supported. Sessions are collaborative, and you remain in control throughout the process.

You don't need to know whether virtual EMDR is right for you before getting started. We'll first discuss what brings you to therapy, your goals, and whether EMDR may be an appropriate approach.

Virtual Therapy Beyond Major Cities

Living outside a major urban centre shouldn't necessarily mean having fewer options for therapy.

Providing therapy virtually allows me to work with adults throughout Ontario, including people who may not have access to EMDR or other specialized approaches in their local community.

For some people, the ability to participate from home can make the difference between putting off therapy and actually being able to access it.

Is Virtual EMDR Right for You?

Virtual EMDR isn't necessarily the right approach for everyone. We'll consider your circumstances, goals, and preferences when determining whether it may be a good fit.

If you're curious about EMDR but aren't sure where to start, a complimentary consultation gives us an opportunity to talk about what you're experiencing and answer your questions.

A Personalized Approach to Therapy

Virtual therapy doesn't mean receiving a one-size-fits-all treatment.

My approach is collaborative and tailored to your experiences, needs, and goals. Depending on what you're experiencing, we may draw from EMDR, Somatic Therapy, CBT, or other therapeutic approaches.

The first step is simply having a conversation about what you're going through and what you'd like to be different.
